How to Clear a Printer Paper Jam: Step-by-Step
A practical guide to clearing paper jams safely — where they occur, the correct removal sequence, and how to stop them coming back.
Where paper jams happen
Most jams occur at four points: the paper feed inlet, the fuser, the exit rollers, and the duplex (two-sided) path. Knowing the location tells you which cover to open and which direction to pull. The printer's control panel usually shows a small diagram of the jammed area.
Power down and let the fuser cool
The fuser reaches 180–200 °C. Always switch the printer off and unplug it, then wait 15–20 minutes before reaching inside. Touching a hot fuser causes burns and can damage the heat-resistant film. Never use metal tools near the fuser.
Remove the jammed sheet the right way
Open the indicated cover, grip the sheet with both hands, and pull gently in the direction of paper travel. Never tear the paper; a leftover scrap is the most common cause of a repeat jam. If resistance is high, open the next cover along the path and ease the sheet out from both ends.
Check the pickup roller and separation pad
Worn pickup rollers and hardened separation pads let two sheets feed at once. Inspect them every 200 000 pages and clean with a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol. Replace a glazed or cracked roller rather than continuing to fight recurring double-feeds.
Use the right paper and storage
Load 60–80 g/m² paper, fan the stack before loading, and store it at 40–60 % relative humidity. Damp or curled paper is the leading cause of misfeeds and jams. Keep paper in its sealed ream wrapper until use.
Preventive maintenance
Keep the monthly volume near, not above, the rated load (about 50 000 pages for mid-range units), clean the paper path quarterly, and use dry, undamaged media. A light vaccum pass on the feed area removes dust that builds static and drags extra sheets in.
When to stop and call for service
If jams repeat after clearing, or you see torn film inside the fuser, stop. Forced pulling can break the flag sensor or gear train. Our replacement rollers, pads, and fuser films carry a 3 months warranty, so a worn part is a cheap, fast fix rather than a board-level repair.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pull paper backward to clear a jam?
No. Always pull in the feed direction. Pulling backward stresses the registration rollers and can leave fragments that trigger the next jam. If the sheet will not move, open an adjacent cover and release the tension first.
Why does my printer jam only after humid weather?
Humidity above 60 % makes paper absorb moisture and stick together, so the separation pad cannot feed one sheet at a time. Store paper in a dry place and let a damp ream acclimatise for a few hours before loading.
How do I know the fuser is the problem?
If jams happen near the exit and the page shows streaks or a melted edge, the fuser roller or film is worn. Do not open the hot section unsupervised — wait for it to cool and follow the service manual.
