Toner Cartridge Page Yield: What ISO/IEC 19752 Really Means

Understand the ISO/IEC 19752 page-yield test, why real-world pages fall short, how to estimate cost per page, and how to pick the right yield for your print volume.

What ISO/IEC 19752 actually measures

The ISO/IEC 19752 test prints a standard page at 5% coverage on A4 until the cartridge runs out, then reports the page count. It is a lab condition, not an office one. Every declared yield on a box refers to this single test.

Declared yield vs real pages

Coverage is the share of the page covered in toner. Most business pages sit near 15% coverage. Because yield scales with coverage, a cartridge rated 2,500 pages at 5% prints roughly 830 pages at 15% — about one third. Graphics-heavy or dense reports cut it further.

Why the same cartridge yields differently

Yield also moves with the printer: a higher fuser temperature bakes more toner onto the page, a denser default density setting spends faster, and a bigger duty-cycle engine runs longer per stop. Two models can differ by 20 to 30% on the same cartridge.

Estimate your true cost per page

Divide cartridge price by the yield you actually get, not the box number. A 2,500-page cartridge at 50 USD costs about 0.02 USD per page at 5% coverage, but near 0.06 USD at 15%. Always compare on the coverage you print.

When the low-toner warning lies

Most cartridges carry a counter chip that counts pages, not toner left. It trips at the rated page count even if toner remains. You can usually keep printing past the warning for a while; the chip protects the engine, not the ink level.

Pick the yield that fits your volume

Light users (under 500 pages/month) lose little with standard cartridges. Heavy users (over 3,000 pages/month) should choose high-yield or extra-high-yield to cut cost per page and swap frequency. Match yield to your real monthly volume, not the headline number.

Warranty

Printer Parts Hub covers every toner cartridge with a 3 months fitment warranty. Keep your order number and contact sale@printerpartsfactory.com if a cartridge fails within that window.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a higher-yield cartridge always cost less per page?

Usually yes, because the shell and chip cost the same while toner rises. But if you print little, a high-yield cartridge can expire from shelf time before you finish it. Buy for your actual volume.

Why does the printer say low toner before it is empty?

The chip counts pages against the rated yield, not the toner inside. Past that count it warns, yet usable toner often remains. Keep a spare on hand and swap when print quality drops, not at the first warning.

Is a compatible cartridge's yield the same as an original?

Not always. Yield depends on toner density and fill volume, which vary by maker. A well-made compatible can match or beat the original; a poor one falls short. Check the declared yield and a real-page test before you commit.
